Cars - 918 Porsche Spyder

Offering a unique combination of extremely low fuel consumption, supreme performance and long electric range, the Porsche 918 Spyder represents an essential milestone in Porsche’s strategy on the way to genuine electro-mobility.

Porsche 918 Spyder, a plug-in hybrid embodying the best of Porsche Intelligent Performance is a GO for Production! The price? 500,000 euros ($630,000 USD).

The 918 Spyder prototype combines high-tech racing features and electro-mobility to offer a fascinating range of qualities:

An emission level of just 70 grams CO2 per kilometre on fuel consumption of three litres/100 kilometres (equal to 94 mpg imp) truly outstanding even for an ultra-compact city car, on the one hand, combined with the performance of a super sports car and acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h in just under 3.2 seconds, top speed of 320 km/h (198 mph) plus, and a lap time on the Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT, on the other.

The 918 Spyder is one of three Porsche models with hybrid drive making their world debut at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show. This trio – made up of Porsche’s new Cayenne S Hybrid SUV with parallel full-hybrid drive, the 911 GT3 R Hybrid racing car with electric drive on the front axle and a flywheel mass battery, and the two-seater high-performance 918 Spyder mid-engined sports car with plug-in hybrid – clearly demonstrates not only the great bandwidth of this new drive technology, but also the innovative power of Porsche as a genuine pioneer in hybrid drive.

The highly innovative 918 Spyder concept car combines Porsche’s Intelligent Performance technology, high-tech in motorsport, and classic but modern design to make a truly convincing statement.

The Porsche 918 Spyder with plug-in hybrid provides the performance of a thoroughbred super sports car on fuel consumption of just three litres/100 kilometres in the New European Driving Cycle, equal to a CO2 emission rating of 70 g/km.

This open two-seater is powered by a high-speed V8 developing more than 500 bhp and running at maximum speed engine of 9,200 rpm as well as electric motors on the front and rear axle with overall mechanical output of 218 bhp (160 kW).

The V8 combustion engine is a further development of the highly successful 3.4-litre power unit already featured in the RS Spyder racing car and positioned midship in front of the rear axle, giving the car the right set-up for supreme performance on the race track through its good balance.

Reminiscent of highly successful, legendary racing cars such as the Porsche 917 Le Mans and the current Porsche RS Spyder, the 918 Spyder with its design concept so typical of Porsche arouses powerful emotions. The combination of racing car dimensions, clearly structured design with perfectly balanced surfaces, and innovative details all round creates an overall pattern of aesthetic, perfectly balanced harmony in design full of power and dynamics. This indeed is the ideal synthesis of form and function following Porsche’s design DNA.

Offering a unique combination of extremely low fuel consumption, supreme performance and long electric range, the Porsche 918 Spyder represents an essential milestone in Porsche’s strategy on the way to genuine electro-mobility.

Sports - Diving : Search for the Humboldt Squid

The Humboldt Squid (Dosidicus gigas), also known as Jumbo Squid, Jumbo Flying Squid, or Diablo Rojo (Spanish for Red Devil), is a large, predatory squid found in the waters of the Humboldt Current in the Eastern Pacific Ocean. They are most commonly found at depths of 200–700 metres (660–2,300 ft), from Tierra del Fuego to California. Recent findings suggest the range of this species is spreading north into the waters of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. Though they usually prefer deep water, between 1,000 and 1,500 squid washed up on the Long Beach Peninsula in southwest Washington in the fall of 2004. They have also ventured into Puget Sound.

Although Humboldt Squid are generally found in the warm Pacific waters off of the Mexican coast, recent years have shown an increase in northern migration. The large 1997-98 El Niño event triggered the first sightings of Humboldt Squid in Monterey Bay. Then, during the minor El Niño event of 2002, Humboldt Squid returned to Monterey Bay in higher numbers and have been seen there year-round since then. Similar trends have been shown off the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and even Alaska, although there are no year-round Humboldt Squid populations in these locations. It has been suggested that this change in migration is due to warming waters during El Niño events, but other factors, such as a decrease in upper trophic level predators that would compete with Humboldt Squid for food, could be impacting the migration shift as well.

Sports - Surfing the Wind @ Mount Washington

Mount Washington is the highest peak in the Northeastern United States at 6,288 ft (1,917 m). It is famous for its dangerously erratic weather, and long held the record for the highest wind gust directly measured at the Earth's surface.

The weather of Mount Washington is notoriously erratic. This is partly due to the convergence of several storm tracks, mainly from the South Atlantic, Gulf region and Pacific Northwest. The vertical rise of the Presidential Range, combined with its north-south orientation, makes it a significant barrier to westerly winds. Low-pressure systems are more favorable to develop along the coastline in the winter months due to the relative temperature differences between the Northeast and the Atlantic Ocean. With these factors combined, winds exceeding hurricane force occur an average of 110 days per year. From November to April, these strong winds are likely to occur during two-thirds of the days.

World's first full face transplant man appears on TV

BARCELONA (AFP) - – A Spanish man who underwent the world's first full face transplant appeared before TV cameras on Monday for the first time since his surgery in March.

"Friends, I want to thank the hospital coordinators, the entire medical team, the family of the donor and most of all my family who are supporting me these days," said the 31-year-old, who was identified only as Oscar.

The man, speaking just before checking out of hospital, spoke with considerable difficulty and could not close his mouth and his face appeared swollen.

He reportedly suffered injuries in a shooting accident five years ago.

He wore a blue scarf which hid scars on his neck and his hair was combed foreward to hide scars on his forehead which doctors say will be fully concealed in the future.

A team of about 30 experts carried out the transplant on March 20 at Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron hospital on the man, who could not swallow, breath or talk normally due to his injuries from the accident.

During the 24-hour-long operation, he received new facial muscles, skin, nose, lips, a jaw, teeth, a palate and cheekbones, the leader of the medical team that carried out the procedure, Joan Pere Barret, told the news conference.

"Bit by bit he is improving but he nonetheless has a long and difficult road ahead to have intelligible speech like he had before," he added.

While 11 other face transplants have been carried out around the world previously, Barcelona's Vall d'Hebron hospital says they involved only part of the patient's face.

The first successful face transplant was performed in France in 2005 on Isabelle Dinoire, a 38-year-old woman who had been mauled by her dog.

Since then face transplants have been carried out in China, the United States and Spain, which carried out its first such operation in August 2009.

Spain led the world in organ donations in 2009 for the 18th consecutive year, according to the health ministry.

Sports - All in ONE : Impossible?

THINK AGAIN!

Using your own natural body weight, get the effects of high intensity, low impact total-body cardio plus strength training, yoga and mental-focus techniques.

Create lean muscle without bulk and feel invincible.

Anybody can do this for just 30mins a day with this system, which somehow turns Yoga and beginner “Martial Arts” cardio into a series where you duplicate yourself in another plane and then come back and kick your own butt.

It’s very surreal and it's
a real treat to sweat and not see stars, unlike usual intense workouts.

Even in 'Downward Dog', your muscles are fully activated (that's YOGA for us beginners!).

Have you ever considered that by the time you THINK about it, you'd have wasted 30 minutes of a chance to lose FAT or WEIGHT....or whatever you want to call it?!

If you always wished the Matrix was more like a Jackson Pollock painting, 2 hours of pure fun will turn your friends into colourful casualties.

Food - Fruits : Longans

The tree can grow up to 67 metres in height, and the plant is very sensitive to frost. Longan trees require sandy soil and temperatures that do not typically go below 4.5 degrees Celsius (40 degrees Fahrenheit). Longans and lychees bear fruit at around the same time of the year.

The longan ("dragon eyes") is so named (from its transliteration from Amoy) [liong-gan] because its fruit, when it is shelled, resembles an eyeball (the black seed shows through the translucent flesh like a pupil/iris). The seed is small, round and hard, and of an enamel-like, lacquered black. The fully ripened, freshly harvested shell is bark-like, thin, and firm, making the fruit easy to shell by squeezing the fruit out as if one is "cracking" a sunflower seed. When the shell has more moisture content and is more tender (due to either premature harvest, variety, weather conditions, or transport/storage conditions), the fruit becomes less convenient to shell.

Culinary uses

The fruit is edible, extremely sweet, juicy and succulent in superior agricultural varieties, and apart from ingested fresh, is also often used in East Asian soups, snacks, desserts, and sweet-and-sour foods, either fresh or dried, sometimes canned with syrup in supermarkets.

Dried longan, called guìyuán (桂圆) in Chinese, are often used in Chinese cuisine and Chinese sweet dessert soups. In Chinese food therapy and herbal medicine, it is believed to have an effect on relaxation. In contrast with the fresh fruit, which is juicy and white, the flesh of dried longans is dark brown to almost black. In Chinese medicine the longan, much like the lychee, is thought to give internal "heat" (上火).

Potassium Chlorate has been found to cause the longan tree to blossom. However, this causes stress on the tree if it is used over excessively, eventually killing it.

Self defense, anyone?

Murder at Orchard Plaza

A security officer said he saw a group of five men slashing a 28-year-old man in the lobby before fleeing on foot. -- PHOTO: LIANHE WANBAO

A BLOODY inner city fight involving about 20 men claimed the life of a 28-year-old man on Friday morning.

The slashed body of Mr Mohamed Noraidi Zahari was found in a pool of blood at the entrance of Orchard Plaza by police officers who arrived at the scene after receiving a call at 4.15am.

He was taken unconscious to Singapore General Hospital by officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force but was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The case has been classified as murder.

The police cordoned off a 10m area outside and around the shopping centre in Orchard Road for about six hours while they conducted investigations.

A fight about a petty matter is believed to have broken out between two groups of men when members of one group were having roti prata at a stall near the mall.

Technology - India's US$35 Linux-based computer

NEW DELHI (AFP) - – India has come up with a 35-dollar touch-screen "laptop" -- a computing prototype that it aims to make available to students from elementary schools to universities.

The gadget, developed by the elite Indian Institute of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, is part of a push to give students a better education and technical skills needed to boost India's economic growth.

The first users are expected to be university students with introduction of the Linux-based computing device targeted for next year.

The ministry is going to install broadband Internet at all of its 22,000 colleges so students can use the 1,500-rupee (35-dollar) device, government spokeswoman Mamta Verma told AFP on Friday in New Delhi.

The tablet gadget, which can be run on solar power, is equipped with an Internet browser, video-conferencing capability and a media player, among other facilities.

"This is part of the national initiative to take forward inclusive education," Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters on Thursday.

"The solutions for tomorrow will emerge from India," he said.

Sibal said the cost of the motherboard, chip, processing and other components cost a total of around 35 dollars but the government may subsidise 50 percent of the price for students.

Sibal said the government, which hopes the cost of the device can eventually fall to 10 dollars, is in discussions with global manufacturers to start mass production of the device.

India, whose 63 percent literacy rate lags far behind many other developing nations, such as China with 94 percent, is making efforts to improve its troubled education system, which lacks investment in schools and teachers.

Money - 21 Ways to Make EXTRA $$$$$

Retirees need to budget carefully to stay within their fixed income. If the value of their investments sinks after retirement, seniors often have little choice but to spend less or return to the workforce. But there are plenty of ways to make a little of extra cash without having to deal with an alarm clock and a commute. Here are a few creative ways to boost your retirement income.

Sell your stuff. Retirees have a lifetime's worth of accumulated clothes, books, and furniture. Make some quick cash by holding a garage sale or selling your stuff on eBay or Craigslist. Take clothes to a consignment shop and a box of books to your nearest used book store. Downsizing from two cars to one can also give your monthly budget a significant one-time boost. Savvy sellers can purchase underpriced used goods and resell them at a higher rate.

Market your skills. Whether you know how to hem and alter clothing, research family genealogy, or troubleshoot computers, someone in your neighborhood is likely to pay for your skills. Put an ad in your local newspaper, hang a flier on a community bulletin board, or offer your services online.

Get a higher interest rate. As you age, you'll want to keep a significant amount of your savings outside of the stock market. Shop around for the best interest rate on certificates of deposit, bonds, and savings accounts. Consider an online saving account, which will likely offer a higher interest rate than the brick-and-mortar variety.

Prune your investments. Review your investment portfolio and get rid of funds that consistently perform poorly. Also, "identify investments that have high expenses and transfer that money into a comparable investment that has lower management fees and expenses," says Eric Tyson, a financial planner and coauthor of Personal Finance For Seniors For Dummies.

Maximize Social Security. The age you sign up for Social Security can make a big difference in the size of your checks. For Americans born in 1943 or later, Social Security payments increase by 8 percent for each year you delay claiming between ages 62 and 70. "If you have good health, you will generally be better not taking the benefits early," says Tyson. "If you have a health problem or have some reason to believe you won't have a long life expectancy, that might be a reason to take Social Security a little bit earlier." Retirees who have already claimed their benefits still have an opportunity to boost their checks. Seniors who pay back the entire amount received without interest can then reclaim at the higher rate.

Utilize Medicare benefits. Sign up for Medicare Part B at age 65 to avoid a 10 percent premium increase for each year of delayed enrollment. Shop around annually for the most economical Medicare Part D prescription drug plan that meets your medication needs. And take advantage of the new services Medicare will soon begin covering. Beneficiaries will no longer have to pay any out-of-pocket costs for most preventive care, including an annual wellness visit beginning in January 2011.

Get a rewards credit card. You're going to continue to spend on food, clothing, and gas. You might as well get a credit card that pays you 1 to 2 percent cash back on your everyday purchases. "If you look around, you can find a no fee card that gives you some benefit," says Tyson. But he cautions: "A lot of the rewards card sock you with annual fees and get you some other way." Of course, if you carry a credit card balance, the extra cash will be lost.

Consult. Put your lifetime of accumulated experience to work by taking on consulting work. "By the time you are in your 50s, you probably know people from a variety of companies based on where you've been," says Mark Miller, publisher of RetirementRevised.com and author of The Hard Times Guide to Retirement Security: Practical Strategies for Money, Work, and Living. "You can go out and do project-based stuff. It is a way to gain flexibility and set you own schedule and work from a home office."

Tutor. Consider offering to help teach children algebra, a foreign language, test preparation, or even drilling younger students on their multiplication tables. "People continue to spend on their kids," says Tyson. "If there is a service you can provide to parents to help them with their kids, such as tutoring kids, your skills will be in demand." Sports fans may be able to land a gig coaching or refereeing youth games or giving golf lessons. And those with teaching credentials

Babysit. Help harried working parents by offering babysitting services. Or better yet, work out an arrangement to get paid to spend time with your own grandchildren. "When I was working and had young children, I paid my mother to babysit," says Jan Cullinane, coauthor of The New Retirement: The Ultimate Guide to the Rest of Your Life. "The kids couldn't have had a better caregiver and she did the laundry for me as well."

Eldercare. At the other end of the aging spectrum, you can provide nonmedical eldercare services for an older retiree. "You go to someone's house and you help them out with lunch, light housekeeping, and take them to appointments," says Cullinane. "Basically you help keep someone's elderly parent company."

Hobbies and crafts. Turn your hobby or craft into a stream of income. Offer to frame pictures, make scrapbooks, or sell your hand-crocheted doilies online. "If you love making jewelry and can sell it to little boutiques, you can make a little business out of it," says Cullinane.

Rent out your space. Retirees who live in big cities or vacation destinations can rent out rooms to travelers. When you leave town, you can lease out the entire house. If you don't want to share your space, consider renting out your garage or basement as storage space.

Blog. Pick a topic that interests you and start researching and writing posts online. The more hits you generate, the more money you will make if you have advertising on the site. Strive to make enough to pay for your Internet connection.

Temp. Employers reluctant to hire new full-time workers with benefits may increasingly rely on short-term help. Temporary jobs and project assignments can be ideal for seniors who want to bring in some income but also enjoy a significant amount of leisure time. Contact a temp agency about short-term projects, seasonal work, or a job filling in for employees who are on vacation or maternity leave.

Garden. Avid gardeners can sell their excess fruits, vegetables, and flowers to farmer's markets, local garden centers, or even neighbors. Alternatively, you could help others learn to prune their rose bushes or select the ideal plants for a sunny spot. Outdoor lovers who don't mind mowing lawns and weeding are sure to find eager customers.

Errands. Retirees who are handy around the house will never be without extra cash. Other easy errands you could provide include grocery shopping, rides to the airport, and picking up dry cleaning.

Cook. Bake sales aren't just for children's fund raisers. Try selling freshly bakes pies, bread, or cookies at local events. If you're more of a cook than a baker, jams, sauces, and even prepared meals could be easy to sell to busy workers.

Pet sit. Animal lovers should have no problem making a few extra dollars dog walking or grooming. Also consider pet sitting when owners go on vacation or travel for work.

Tour guide. History buffs should look into a post-retirement job as a guide at a local museum or historical monument. A part-time tour guide position will allow you to share your knowledge with others and interact with tourists from throughout the world.

Ask for discounts. Some senior discounts are well publicized, but others are only available to those who ask. One of the best perks of getting older is getting a discount simply because you're willing to admit your age.

Gadgets - So you own a BlackBerry!

This is NOT rocket science to most Techno-junkies out there, but it can be mind-boggling to some!

How to maximize free space

It is a good idea to take active measures to maximize the BlackBerry smartphone's available flash memory, and thus, prolong the time before the operating system starts the Low Memory Manager application. The following are suggestions on how to maximize available flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone:

Use a media card

Media cards are especially useful for BlackBerry smartphone users who want to store media files like songs, pictures, videos, voice notes, and ring tones, or who want to store pictures they take with the built-in cameras. Built-in video cameras on BlackBerry smartphones require a media card to function.

To make sure the built-in camera is set up to save picture files on the media card, complete the following steps:

  1. Install the media card in the BlackBerry smartphone.
  2. Open the Camera application.
  3. Display the menu and select Options.
  4. Set the Store Pictures field to On Media Card. You can also change the Folder setting to the particular folder in which you want to save pictures.
Remove unnecessary items

Removing features and applications that are underused increases the available flash memory on the BlackBerry smartphone.

  • Use the Setup Wizard application to remove languages that you do not use from the BlackBerry smartphone. Removing languages is highly recommended because it is one of the most significant ways to increase available flash memory.

To remove languages from the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

    1. On the Home screen, open Setup Wizard.
    2. Select Languages.
    3. Select the language you want to use on the BlackBerry smartphone and click Next. The BlackBerry smartphone deletes all languages that you do not select.
  • Remove underused applications.

To remove applications from the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps.

    1. On the Home screen, open Options.
    2. Select Advanced Options.
    3. Select Applications. The BlackBerry smartphone takes time to build a comprehensive list of the installed applications.
    4. Highlight the application you want to delete, display the menu and select Delete.
  • Minimize the number of contacts stored in the Address Book on the BlackBerry smartphone.

One way to minimize the number of contacts stored in the Address Book is to use the remote address lookup feature when you need to send an email message rather than store company contacts in the Address Book. You can use this feature if your BlackBerry smartphone uses BlackBerry® Device Software 4.0 and later and one of BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 3.5 for Microsoft® Exchange or BlackBerry® Enterprise Server software version 2.2 or later for IBM® Lotus® Domino®.

Delete old items

The BlackBerry smartphone user can delete old and unused items and also adjust settings so that the BlackBerry smartphone deletes old items as part of its regular routine maintenance.

  • Delete Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) messages that are no longer needed. Because MMS messages can contain large media files and cannot be stored on a media card, MMS messages can use a lot of flash memory. If you do not want to delete the media files in an MMS message, open the MMS message and save the media files on the media card before you delete the MMS message.
  • Change the Keep Messages setting on the BlackBerry smartphone to reduce the number of old messages using flash memory.

To change the Keep Messages setting, complete the following steps.

    1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
    2. Display the menu and select Options.
    3. Select General Options.
    4. Set the Keep Messages field to either 15 Days or 30 Days.
  • Change the Keep Appointments setting to reduce the number of old calendar events using flash memory.

To change the Keep Appointments setting, complete the following steps.

    1. On the Home screen, open Calendar.
    2. Display the menu and select Options.
    3. Select General Options.
    4. Set the Keep Appointments field to either 15 Days or 30 Days.

Note: Email messages and appointments are only removed from the BlackBerry smartphone. The email messaging application and the appointment application the BlackBerry smartphone is associated with will retain the email messages and appointments that are removed from the BlackBerry smartphone after the time period that is specified.

  • Clear the browser cache often.
To clear the browser cache, complete the following steps:
    1. On the Home screen, open Browser.
    2. Display the menu and select Options.
    3. Select Cache Operations.
    4. Select Clear for Content Cache. (You can increase the amount of flash memory by also selecting Clear for Pushed Content.)
Adjust settings for optimal storage efficiency

Adjust the following settings for optimal storage efficiency on your BlackBerry smartphone:

  • In BlackBerry® Desktop Software, set messages to stop being forwarded to the BlackBerry smartphone when it is cradled.

To adjust this setting complete these steps.

    1. In BlackBerry® Desktop Manager, open Email Settings.
    2. Check the check box beside Disable message redirection while your device is connected.
  • Set messages to prompt you when deleting an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone. The prompt allows you to choose to either delete the message on the BlackBerry smartphone only or on the BlackBerry smartphone and the messaging server, which deletes the email message on both the BlackBerry smartphone and the email application with which it is associated.

To adjust this setting on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

    1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
    2. Display the menu and select Options.
    3. Select Email Reconciliation.
    4. Select Prompt for the Delete On setting. (You can also select Handheld rather than Prompt, which will delete messages on the BlackBerry smartphone without a prompt, when you choose to delete messages.)

Note: If you position the cursor on a date field in the email messages list on the BlackBerry smartphone and select Delete Prior, you will only delete the messages on the BlackBerry smartphone no matter what the setting is in the Delete On field, which leaves the email messages saved in the email application with which the BlackBerry smartphone is associated.

  • Flash memory is used to download and display email messages on the BlackBerry smartphone. Set the Auto More option to No to make sure that only the sections of the email message that you want to read on the BlackBerry smartphone are downloaded, displayed, and thus, stored in flash memory. By setting the Auto More option to No, the BlackBerry smartphone displays approximately the first 2 KB of an email message; you can display more of the email message by selecting More on the menu.

Note: If the Auto More option is set to Yes, scrolling automatically displays more of the email message. Be aware that you may be dowloading large email messages by scrolling through an email message on the BlackBerry smartphone.

Note: The size of the entire email message is displayed at the bottom of the email message screen. Average messages are usually no larger than 2 KB.

By setting the Auto More option to No, you can make sure the flash memory is not unnecessarily used on the BlackBerry smartphone by disallowing the automatic download option.

To set the Auto More option to No, complete the following steps:

    1. On the Home screen, open Messages.
    2. Display the menu and select Options.
    3. Select General Options.
    4. In the Auto More field, select No.

Caution: The More All option on the menu gives you the choice of downloading the entire email message at once, no matter how the Auto More setting is configured.

The More All option should be used with caution since the BlackBerry smartphone uses flash memory to store email messages that have been displayed.

  • For BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry Device Software 3.8 or 4.0, set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression. Although content compression causes the BlackBerry smartphone to work harder (thus, using more battery power), it will make sure that email messages use the least amount of flash memory that is possible.

To set the BlackBerry smartphone to allow content compression, complete the following steps:

    1. On the Home screen, open Options.
    2. Select Security Options.
    3. Select General Settings.
    4. Set the Content Compression field to Enabled.

How to maximize battery power

Battery power can be maximized by following these simple suggestions.

Use BlackBerry smartphone shortcuts to access common system features quickly. For instructions, see the Getting Started Guide for your BlackBerry smartphone. Using shortcuts allows you to do the same things on your BlackBerry smartphone more quickly and efficiently, while saving battery power.

Some common shortcuts include the following:

  • To delete a highlighted item, press the Delete key.
  • To select or clear a check box, press the Space key.
  • To view available values in a field, press the Alt key.
  • To switch applications:
    1. Hold the Alt key and press the Escape key.
    2. Continue to hold the Alt key and highlight an application.
    3. Release the Alt key.
  • Set the Auto On/Off option to turn off the BlackBerry smartphone at a time of day when you are not using it (such as at night), and turn on again at a time of day that you are ready to use it (such as in the morning just before you wake up). Battery power is saved by turning the power off at times when the BlackBerry smartphone is not being used.

To set the Auto On/Off option on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

    1. On the Home screen, open Options.
    2. Select Auto On/Off.
    3. Specify the on and off times.

Tip: Set the BlackBerry smartphone to turn on just before you need to use it, (such as a few minutes before you wake up in the morning) so that the BlackBerry smartphone has a chance to receive the email messages sent to you during the time that the BlackBerry smartphone was turned off. This way, the email messages have already been received when you are ready to read them.

  • When a particular wireless connection is not needed, use the Manage Connections application on the BlackBerry smartphone to turn off the connection. For example, if you do not need to use Bluetooth® technology, you can use Manage Connections to turn the Bluetooth connection off.

To turn the Bluetooth connection off on the BlackBerry smartphone, complete the following steps:

    1. On the Home screen, open Manage Connections.
    2. Click Bluetooth.
    3. Note: Using Manage Connections, turn the mobile wireless transceiver off when you know you are out of range of the mobile network. Turning the mobile wireless transceiver off prevents the BlackBerry smartphone from continually attempting to locate the mobile network, which uses a lot of battery power.

Let's talk about CARS !

Singapore - What's NEWS?

The 42-storey high Singapore Flyer was shut down on Sunday after being struck by lightning.

Some 200 visitors were taking a ride on the world’s tallest Ferris wheel when one of the electrical cables supplying power to the air-conditioners in the capsules were struck at around 1pm.

Although the wheel was still operational, the air-conditioning in the capsules were cut.

A Flyer spokesperson said the management’s decision to stop the ride was for comfort’s sake and that no passengers were hurt in the incident. They were escorted off safely and the attraction has since been closed.

Repair works are currently in progress, according to the spokesman. It is not known why the lightning conductor on the Flyer did not function correctly on Sunday.

And yet, this is not the first time the Singapore Flyer had to be closed.

In 2008, the attraction was shut down for a month after it stalled, trapping 173 passengers inside the capsule for nearly six hours. Some of those trapped had to be rescued by the Singapore Civil Defence Force. A new backup system, with a separate power supply was built following the incident.

Singapore’s eye-in-the-sky is expected to reopen on Wednesday.

Singapore - What's NEWS?

Filipina maid inherits millions from employer

SINGAPORE (AFP) - – A devoted Filipina maid inherited six million Singapore dollars (more than four million US) from her late employer after more than 20 years of service, a newspaper report said Wednesday.

"I am the luckiest maid in Singapore, with or without the money," the 47-year-old single woman -- identified only by the pseudonym "Christine" -- told the Straits Times in an interview.

The maid refused to be named in public for fear of possible threats to her life in the impoverished Philippines, where wealthy people have been kidnapped for ransom and some killed by their abductors.

The windfall, including cash and a luxury apartment near the Orchard Road shopping belt, came from the estate of her employer Quek Kai Miew, a medical doctor and philanthropist who died last year at 66.

The maid had also taken care of the doctor's late mother, and was told that she would be a beneficiary of her employer's will when it was drawn up in 2008.

"There were no secrets between us. I was not surprised at all when she told me how much I was going to get," the maid recalled.

"Christine" was devastated when Quek died a year ago, as the two were inseparable, and temporarily moved in with the doctor's nephew for solace.

"It was heartbreaking for me as I saw more years with Doctor Quek than with my own mother. I would break down every time I thought about her. I could not be by myself," she said.

"I was always beside her. Wherever she went, I was with her."

The maid, who is now applying for permanent residency in Singapore, said her newfound wealth had not changed her lifestyle.

"I do not really think much about the money I got. I just live my life as I did before, and not as a rich person," the maid, dressed simply in a blouse and slacks with short-cropped hair, was quoted as saying.

"I am still who I was before. I cannot behave differently because I have money now. Even my Filipino maid friends here still treat me the same."

Nearly 200,000 foreign maids, mostly from the Philippines and Indonesia, work in affluent Singapore, which has a population of five million.

Health - Control Calories & Cravings!

#1 - This is a method we didn't know about until recently, and it involves food scent.

Smelling food can trick your brain into thinking you've eaten.

A recent study found that those who inhaled peppermint in scent form every 2 hours ate (get this) 2700 calories LESS per week than they normally did.

Let us put that in perspective: That's a fatloss of more than half a pound a week... from sniffing peppermint!

Vanilla also works. You can keep vanilla-scented drops or even candles around the office and take a wiff every few hours.

How easy is that?

#2 - Eat a handful of nuts 20mins before any meal. Almonds, pecans, walnuts, etc...(preferrably raw nuts as this reduces the oxidation of polyunsaturated fats)

The reason it works is because the healthy fats, fiber, protein, and density of micronutrients (antioxidants, vitamins, minerals) in nuts help to satisfy a lot of the nutrition needs of your body, thereby greatly reducing your appetite before eating full meals.
